The police commissioner is hoping that police recruits nervous about upcoming exams on criminal procedure and penal law will relax and listen to their iPods.

In an effort to make studying easier on the more than 900 recruits, who must also master tests for strength, agility, and community relations before graduation on December 27, the police department is handing out iPods stocked full of coursework. The iPods will allow the police hopefuls to study without lugging around heavy textbooks.

“Now a recruit can watch a class on ‘search and seizure’ while going home on the subway,” the commissioner, Raymond Kelly, said yesterday.

The iPods will have video downloads of classes taught during the semester, except for those including security sensitive information, police said.
