The entranceway to a large Bronx apartment building collapsed yesterday, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of residents.
Tenants inside the 53-unit building were ushered to the roof by firefighters, then led to an adjacent apartment building where they could exit to the street, a senior director of marketing and communications at The American Red Cross of Greater New York, Larry Geiger, said.
While it didn’t appear that the entire building was in danger of collapse, a vacate order was issued to tenants because debris blocked the exit after a 20-foot by 20-foot section of the entranceway collapsed into the cellar, a spokeswoman for the New York City Department of Buildings, Kate Lindquist, said.
The American Red Cross of Greater New York offered displaced tenants hotel rooms.
