A Queens man was charged yesterday with the sexual assault of a female friend whom he allegedly lured into a garage apartment and tortured for several hours, the Queens district attorney’s office said.
On May 16, Joseph Burrell, 44, invited the victim to his family’s home in the Jamaica section of Queens for what he told her was a family barbecue. Once there, he brought her into a garage apartment, where he allegedly made sexual advances at the victim, the district attorney’s office said.
When the victim, whom officials did not identify, resisted Mr. Burrell’s advances, he allegedly became enraged and began to beat her.
Over the next several hours, Mr. Burrell allegedly attempted to rape and sodomize the victim, and at one point broke a glass object over her body, the office said.
Mr. Burrell’s brother called the police after discovering his brother and the victim, who was naked and in critical condition, the following morning, the office said. Mr. Burrell fled the scene, but was arrested later that day by Queens detectives.
Mr. Burrell faces a litany of criminal charges, including predatory sexual assault and attempted rape, the office said. He was arraigned yesterday and is being held on $100,000 bail. If convicted, Mr. Burrell faces 25 years to life in prison.
