Police are searching for five suspects whom investigators believe beat a 20-year-old black victim with a baseball bat after invoking racist slurs, police officials said.
At least one of the suspects hit the victim, who police did not identify, in the face with the bat at about 8:15 p.m. near Julius Weissglass Memorial Park in Staten Island, police said.
The suspects escaped from the scene of the incident, which took place on the corner of Simonson and Heusden streets, in a silver Cadillac, police said.
Emergency services arrived and rushed the victim to Staten Island University Hospital, where he was treated for facial trauma, police said.
Hate crimes are up slightly this year, according to the police. Just last week, three nooses were found hanging in separate incidents around the city.
