A Rash of Burglaries in New Developments On Staten Island

There has been a rash of burglaries on Staten Island, where thieves break into new homes that have been sitting empty.
Police say there have been 31 incidents since September where thousands of dollars worth of stoves, refrigerators, microwaves, dishwashers, and even toilets have been taken from homes in new developments where sales are slow.
The Building Industry Association has sent an e-mail to its members advising builders to secure job sites, and the Staten Island Board of Realtors plans to offer a police safety course to its broker members this week.
Police are asking neighbors to watch for thieves who might be carrying new appliances out of the house, instead of into the new home.
