Two groups are offering rewards for information leading to the capture of a man wanted for robbing and shooting an off-duty Brooklyn police officer on Sunday.
Citizens Outraged at Police Being Shot, a program that provides cash in exchange for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone who shoots or attempts to shoot a New York City police officer, is offering $10,000. The Police Department’s special Crime Stoppers Unit is offering up to $2,000.
At about 6 a.m., the police officer, Wiener Philippe, 26, was on his way to his Crown Heights home from McDonald’s. A man brandishing a gun stole his wallet, which contained his police identification, police said.
There was an exchange of gunfire, according to the authorities. The suspect shot several rounds, striking Officer Philippe in the shoulder. The officer, who has been on the job for a few years and works in Bushwick, fired roughly 10 shots, but missed the suspect. Officer Philippe chased the suspect before collapsing. Officer Philippe was taken to Kings County Hospital. He was in stable condition as of last night, police said.
