A state agency has misspent tens of thousands of dollars in taxpayer funds, improperly using money designated for a specific program, according to an audit by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli released yesterday.
The New York State Office for the Aging spent federal money designated for a program meant to train volunteer investigators of nursing homes on such nonprogram related expenses as office furniture and air travel to conferences, the report found. Of a sample selection of large expenditures reported by the program’s central office, Mr. DiNapoli’s office found 88% were not program-related.
The program receives $3 million a year in state and federal funding, according to the report.
