While the Mets compete against the rival Philadelphia Phillies in their last home opener at Shea Stadium today, City Council member Hiram Monserrate will lead protesters in a march against a proposed rezoning of nearby Willets Point, demanding that the plan include guarantees of affordable housing and workers’ wages.
The strip of auto repair shops at Willets Point, nicknamed the “Iron Triangle,” is slated to be the site of a $3 billion, 75-acre development that would include a convention center, hotel, office space, and housing units. Local businesses, some of which have occupied the area for decades, have resisted the plan and Mayor Bloomberg has suggested that eminent domain could be invoked to claim the area for development should local owners refuse to sell their land.
The city has argued that the area, which lacks paved roads and sewer systems in some parts, is blighted. Mr. Bloomberg has suggested that the development would “revitalize the area,” by adding jobs, housing, and cultural institutions as well as adding vital infrastructure to the historically neglected Queens neighborhood.
Some observers have also suggested the area could be a site for a new Javits Convention Center.
