John Allen Gable, who died February 18, was the executive director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association and a leading Roosevelt scholar. The 62-year-old scholar died of cancer at a hospital in his hometown of Glen Cove, the Association announced.

Gable published a book on the 26th President of the United States, “Bull Moose Years: Theodore Roosevelt and the Progressive Party” (1978), and also founded and edited the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal, a quarterly publication launched in 1975.

Gable was born in Rockford, Ill., and became interested in TR at an early age after reading a biography. He did his Ph.D in history at Brown University, with a thesis on TR, and became director of the association in 1974.

In addition to his own scholarship, Gable helped numerous other TR scholars, including David McCulloch, the historian and author of “Mornings on Horseback,” and Edmund Morris, whose first volume of a projected three-volume TR biography won a Pulitzer Prize.

“He was a good example of a professional historian who wanted to do something practical in the world,” Mr. Morris said.

Gable was a frequently tapped expert on TR for history documentaries and was on the advisory board of the Roosevelt Study Center in The Netherlands. He held teaching posts at C.W. Post Campus, Long Island University, Briarcliff College, Brown University, and most recently at Hofstra University.
