‘Cuba Libre’
Just as it was in the 19th century, The New York Sun is on the side of the Cuban people against oppression in the 21st century. And again, the Sun is almost alone among American newspapers taking this stance. Your editorial of June 14, 2005 [“Spain Against the Cubans, Again”] and the reporting pieces by Meghan Clyne reaffirm the Sun as the friend of “Cuba Libre.” Your contribution is appreciated.

‘Affordable Housing’
I am a great admirer of C. Virginia Fields. Throughout her time in New York City politics, Ms. Fields has displayed a dedication to improving the lives of New Yorkers through honest, straightforward politics. It is for this reason that, upon reading Ms. Fields’s letter to the editor [“Affordable Housing,” June 14, 2005] on the topic of affordable housing, I found myself shaking my head at the transformation of another good person into a typical politician; claiming successes born from the sweat and toil of hundreds, maybe thousands, of people as their own, while resorting to the distasteful, unproductive act of “mudslinging.” It is particularly disturbing to me, and, I would imagine, to the thousands of families now residing in the city as a direct result of Mr. Bloomberg’s initiatives, that Ms. Fields would choose to base her campaign attacks on a topic that the mayor has dedicated much time and effort to.

‘Facing the Music’
Mark Steyn’s piece “Facing the Music,” on Democratic complaints about Guantanamo [Opinion, June 20, 2005] was right on target and just perfect. Could you please pass my gratitude along to Mr. Steyn?
