‘Hamas Takes Over Gaza Security Services’
Richard Perle, former chairman of the Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board, gets it just right in his quote from Eli Lake’s report on the Hamas victory in Gaza [Foreign, “Hamas Takes Over Gaza Security Services,” June 15, 2007].
Mr. Perle says, “Why we thought it was in our interest to work with a police force, Fatah, that routinely murdered its opponents and existed largely to keep a corrupt Arafat organization in place is beyond me.”
It was using Central Intelligence Agency training and American money and weapons to prop up the terrorist Arafat/Abbas/Fatah combination that has led to the present victory of Hamas in Gaza. Make no mistake.
If Hamas were not so heavily trained and armed by Iran, Fatah might have won, and the same bloodbaths and terrorism would be taking place with the “moderate” guys doing the dirty work.
Despite the overwhelming evidence against Mahmoud Abbas, now hiding out in Ramallah, Secretary Rice continues to mouth the language of “full support” and the need to “give them [the Palestinian people] an opportunity to return to peace and a better future.”
Let us hope that when Prime Minister Olmert meets with President Bush at the White House, that the two leaders dispose of the wishful thinking and address the harsh reality — Iran is backing Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon/Syria, and Mr. Abbas is no better than either of them.
Iran is the threat to Israel, America, and the entire western world. The only way to security is to eliminate the threat while we can.
