‘Sushi, Diet Soda Latest Health Target’

Thank you for your coverage concerning mercury levels in New Yorkers [New York, “Sushi, Diet Soda Latest Health Targets,” July 24, 2007]. Fortunately, as the article suggests, mercury levels can be reduced simply by choosing fish that are low inmercury.

Fish is a healthy food, but in some cases, high mercury levels can get in the way. To help consumers choose fish that are high in Omega-3 fatty acids, but low in mercury, grocery stores should simply post the Food and Drug Administration’s advice about mercury in seafood.

California requires this advice to be posted, and stores in Westchester County are posting it in response to a request from the county government.

But no such request has been made by New York City or other New York counties. Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s voluntarily post signs, but other companies like the Food Emporium, Pathmark, and Stop & Shop have refused to do so.

These companies and others should keep up with their competitors so everyone gets the information they need to make informed choices at the seafood counter.

“Murdoch, Son Differ Sharply Over Israel”

It is wrongheaded and premature to assume at this early juncture that the news coverage and editorial stance of the Wall Street Journal would be negatively influenced vis-à-vis Israel should the newspaper’s day-to-day editorial oversight be placed into the hands of James Murdoch, the son of Rupert Murdoch [National, “Murdoch, Son Differ Sharply Over Israel,”July 25,2007]. Even if James Murdoch does hold negative attitudes toward Israel and its treatment of the Palestinians, it is pure conjecture to assume that he would act on his personal views to influence editorials or news coverage aboutIsrael.

It is not even clear where he stands on Israel, or any of the other myriad issues that might be the subject of the Journal’s scrutiny in the future.

The jury is still out on what changes, editorially or otherwise, any transfer of ownership would bring.

Let’s focus now on what is known: Rupert Murdoch has always been a true friend of the Jewish people and of the state of Israel.
