‘Retailers Will Face Fines for Selling Unlabeled Fur’
As the sponsor of the bill in the Assembly, I would like to make an addendum to your recent coverage of New York’s new fur labeling law [New York, “Retailers Will Face Fines for Selling Unlabeled Fur,” November 13, 2007]. In addition to requiring manufacturers and retailers to label all real fur properly, the law also requires affirmative labeling of fake fur. Consumers are increasingly using their pocketbooks to make socially conscious choices in their purchasing, and transparency in labeling is an important tool in allowing them to do so. Many New Yorkers were outraged by the use of dog fur for garments and by the cruelty of the harvesting practices of raccoon dogs. The new law will protect not only those who want to avoid inadvertently supporting an industry they do not condone, but also those who actively seek out “faux” products and want that assurance labeled
