‘Why Pataki Is the Wrong Name’
Governor Spitzer’s proposal to rename Hudson River Park Pataki Park is ill-conceived, as Henry Stern suggested in The New York Sun [Opinion, “Why Pataki Is the Wrong Name,” January 8, 2008].
Mr. Stern’s ironic suggestion (pace Jonathan Swift) of Clorox Park as an example of a corporate name, which would have the advantage of adding to the city coffers, leads me to the realization that the open-minded, buoyant way in which I approach nature would be altered should the Governor succeed in his proposal.
Entering any park named for a living or existing entity would present me with an otherwise unnecessary need to firsts cast off any less than positive feelings I may have regarding the person so named which might be difficult, thus negating what could have been a free and easy experience.
