The president of an influential land-use advocacy group, the Municipal Art Society, will step down early next year, the organization announced yesterday.
Kent Barwick has been with the group for more than 40 years, and has weighed in on issues spanning from South Street Seaport to the preservation of Grand Central Terminal. Under Mr. Barwick, the organization has been highly vocal in its support for the creation of an expansive East River waterfront project along Manhattan’s shore, along with offering strong opposition, including a lawsuit, to the state’s plans to expand the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. “The excitement of the growth in New York brings both opportunities and perils, and we believe this is the right moment to choose a man or woman smitten enough with New York to take up a very ambitious assignment, and young enough to stick with it for at least a decade,” Mr. Barwick said in a statement.
