NOW HEAR THIS New Yorkers are famous for speaking their minds, and a public art installation called the Freedom of Expression National Monument – an enormous red megaphone – makes it even easier to be heard. Installed in Foley Square in Lower Manhattan, the monument is presented by Creative Time and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. HARDWORKING WRITERS The editor of the book “Labor Days: An Anthology of Fiction about Work” (Random House), David Gates, appears with several contributors to the volume, Amy Hempel, Lynne Tillman, and Paul Beatty. Mr. Gates is the author of the novel “Jernigan” (Random House) and the short-story collection “Wonders of the Invisible World” (Random House). COMEDY


GOP GUFFAWS Jeff “Big Daddy” Wayne of HBO’s Comedy Relief hosts the rightwing comedy show “The Right Stuff” with an act that addresses gun control, capital punishment, and “the plight of white males.” Featured comedians include Fox News contributor Julia Gorin, Chris Warren, who is recently back from entertaining troops in the Middle East, and Steve Eblin, who has performed in comedy tours in the Middle East and Afghanistan. KICKING KERRY, BEATING BUSH New York Sports Clubs hosts election-themed fitness classes that include jumping “Johns” or “Georges,” boxing exercises with punching bags masked as candidates, and a “swapping parties” sprint between cones marked Democrat and Republican. Members of Voterobics can also don their chosen candidate’s mask while getting warmed up for the coming election.

More than 100 stores in the city, including Brooks Brothers and Niketown, waive sales tax on clothing purchases of less than $110 during tax-free shopping week (through Monday, see www.nycvisit.com).


The Grand Old marketPlace hosts book signings today by Michael Reagan (10 a.m.-noon), Newt Gingrich (1-3 p.m.), and General Tommy Franks (4-5 p.m.). Souvenirs and gifts are also on sale. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s gift shop offers prints, books, scarves, and totes bearing the work of patriotic impressionist painter Childe Hassam (1859-1935), whose work is currently on view. POPS IN THE PARK The New York City Host Committee presents the New York Pops in a concert of American music. Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers join the orchestra for an evening of music. The concert is part of the committee’s Music, Entertainment, and Culture Day. SPREAD THE WEALTH? Filmmaker Martin Fisher hosts a panel titled Prosperity: Sharing Our Wealth and Resources. Playwright Marty Pottenger reads from her play “Abundance,” and speakers include philanthropist Lewis Cullman, the chair of nonprofit management at the Milano Graduate School, Aida Rodriguez, and journalist Laura Flanders. CNN BLITZ A new walking tour gives news junkies an inside look at CNN Studios. Opening today, the 45-minute tour includes a survey of journalism history, inside information on covering the news, and a visit to CNN’s studios and newsrooms.
