Alex Rodriguez hit two balls over the fence but was credited with only one home run, and the Yankees broke loose last night for an 8-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

Darrell Rasner won his third straight start since he was called up from the minors and New York banged out 13 hits while snapping a four-game skid. The Yankees had lost six of seven, scoring only 14 runs during that span.

Rodriguez’s return from the disabled list has provided an immediate boost. He homered in his first game back Tuesday night, a 12-2 loss, and finished with a home run and two doubles in this one.

The three-time MVP homered off Garrett Olson (3-1) to start the third, then hit another ball over the wall in the sixth that was incorrectly called an RBI double.

It was the latest in a string of home run calls that have been blown by big league umpires lately, including one at Yankee Stadium on Sunday night. That’s left some calling for instant replay in baseball.

This ruling didn’t end up costing the Yankees, it just left A-Rod flipping his helmet at second base and shaking his head in disbelief.

Working on 10 days’ rest, Rasner (3-0) pitched five-hit ball while setting career highs for innings (seven) and strikeouts (six). He walked one and lowered his ERA to 1.89.

Olson lasted only 2 2-3 innings, giving up six runs and eight hits. The Orioles lost for only the third time in 11 games.

Johnny Damon hit a two-run single and Robinson Cano had an RBI double for New York, which built a 6-0 cushion after three and improved to 5-9 against left-handed starters this season.

BRAVES 11, Mets 4 Jeff Francoeur, back in the lineup after a rare night off, homered and drove in four runs to help the Atlanta Braves beat the Mets 11-4 last night for their third straight win in the series.

Francoeur did not play in the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader, ending his streak of 370 consecutive games played. It was his first game off since October 1, 2005.

Braves rookie Jair Jurrjens (5-3) gave up only one earned run in seven innings for his second win over the Mets this season. Jurrjens gave up five hits and two runs with two walks and a strikeout.

Mets starter Mike Pelfrey (2-5) gave up six runs on eight hits in four innings.

The rest must have helped Francoeur. He hit his first homer since April 12, a two-run shot in the sixth off reliever Pedro Feliciano.

Mark Teixeira had three hits, including a three-run double, and Chipper Jones hit his 12th homer.

Francoeur drove in runs with a third-inning triple and fifth-inning single before his homer. Needing a double for the cycle, he hit a soft popup to second base in the seventh.

The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when David Wright’s single drove in Jose Reyes. But the Braves went ahead on Brian McCann’s two-run double and Francoeur’s triple.

The Mets (22-22) fell to .500 for the first time since April 25, when they were 11-11 following a home loss to the Braves.

Pelfrey gave up three hits, including Jones’ 12th homer, and a walk without recording an out before leaving in the fifth. up eight hits and six runs in four innings.
