RECEIVER PRICE CUT BY FALCONS

The Atlanta Falcons cut Peerless Price yesterday, giving up on their former top receiver after two disappointing seasons. Price signed a $37 million contract, including a $10 million bonus, with the Falcons, who acquired him from the Buffalo Bills in a March 2003 trade.

Price was coming off a career season with the Bills, catching 94 passes for 1,252 passes and nine touchdowns in 2002, and was expected to give Michael Vick a go-to receiver. But the move never worked out. Price had only 45 catches and three touchdowns last season, and he was demoted to second team coming into training camp.

BENGALS GIVE UP ON WARRICK

Peter Warrick was released yesterday by the Cincinnati Bengals, who have depth at receiver and had run out of patience with the fourth overall pick in the 2000 draft. The move came a day after the hobbled receiver asked to be released if the Bengals had written him out of their plans.

Warrick caught 79 passes for 819 yards and scored eight touchdowns in 2003. But a small crack in a bone by the knee limited him to one start last season. He missed the minicamps and the start of training camp this year while the leg healed.

GOLF

WOODS, SINGH, MICKELSON WITHDRAW FROM MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

The richest prize in an official golf tournament was not enough to make Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, or Phil Mickelson want to play in the World Match Play Championship.

Sergio Garcia, Masters runner-up Chris DiMarco, Fred Couples, and Davis Love III also decided not to play the HSBC World Match Play Championship. No Americans are in the field, which was finalized yesterday. Retief Goosen (no. 5) is the highest-ranked player in the field and the only player in the top 10.

The tournament, which began in 1964, now counts on the European tour and world ranking. Players qualified based on their finishes in the majors, four designated European tour events and the European Order of Merit ranking. The tournament will be played September 15-18.
