WIE DISQUALIFIED AS SORENSTAM RUNS AWAY WITH SAMSUNG
Michelle Wie’s pro debut made her look like an amateur yesterday when she was disqualified for taking a bad drop from the bushes in the third round of the Samsung World Championship. Talk about a rude welcome to the professional world.
First, Annika Sorenstam blew away the field to win by eight shots, even with a double bogey on the last hole. Then, the 16-year-old Wie no sooner had signed for a 74 to finish fourth – $53,126 – that LPGA Tour officials took her out to the seventh hole to discuss a drop she took the day before.
Wie hit a 5-wood into a Gold Lantana bush Saturday and was barely able to find it. She told Grace Park she was taking an unplayable lie, dropped away from the bush for a one-stroke penalty, then chipped to 15 feet and made the par. It was a critical par save, and Wie went on to a 71. The LPGA Tour was notified about the drop, and officials reviewed tape from NBC Sports before taking Wie and caddie Greg Johnston to the seventh green after the tournament ended yesterday. Nearly two hours later, LPGA Tour rules official Jim Haley and Robert O. Smith said she was disqualified.
Lost in the disqualification was Sorenstam’s eighth victory of the year. She finished at 18-under 270 to finish eight shots ahead of 19-year-old rookie Paula Creamer, and earn $212,500, pushing her over $2 million for the fifth straight season.

MAVERICKS EDGE KNICKS IN PRESEASON GAME AT THE GARDEN
DeSagana Diop’s buzzer-beating tip-in lifted the Dallas Mavericks over the Knicks 104-102 last night, spoiling Knicks coach Larry Brown’s home preseason debut.
Dirk Nowitzki scored 20 points and Josh Howard added 16 for the Mavericks (2-1), who squandered a 16-point lead in the second half. David Lee had 17 points to lead New York and fellow rookie Nate Robinson added 13,including the tying free throws with 7.1 seconds left. Rookie Channing Frye scored 11 points, and Quentin Richardson. Stephon Marbury and Trevor Ariza added 10 apiece.
RAPTORS LOSE TO ISRAELI TEAM
Maccabi Tel Aviv beat an NBA team for the first time in 27 years, topping the Toronto Raptors 105-103 yesterday on Anthony Parker’s jumper with 0.8 seconds left.
Maccabi, the winner of 45 of 51 Israeli titles and three of the last five Euroleague championships, had lost nine straight exhibition games against NBA teams since beating the then-champion Washington Bullets in 1978.

PENN STATE LOSES STANDOUT RECEIVER FOR SEASON
Penn State freshman wide receiver Derrick Williams will miss the rest of the season because of a broken left arm. Williams was injured Saturday with less than four minutes left in Penn State’s 27-25 loss at Michigan when he was tackled during a kickoff return by Carl Tabb. He will be sidelined three to four months, team physician Dr. Wayne Sebastianelli said.
