SAVARD SCORES IN OVERTIME TO GIVE BRUINS VICTORY
Marc Savard scored on a delayed penalty 9:25 into overtime on Sunday night and the Boston Bruins beat the Montreal Canadiens for the first time this season, winning 2–1 in Game 3 of their first-round playoff series.
Tim Thomas made 27 saves for Boston, stopping several shots at close range in overtime. Carey Price stopped 29 shots for the Canadiens, who had beaten the Bruins in all eight games in the regular season and the first two of their best-of-seven playoff series.
BIRON, FLYERS BLANK CAPITALS TO EVEN SERIES
Looking tired and frustrated, Alex Ovechkin had trouble simply getting his puck on the stick a couple of times as the game wore on. The Philadelphia Flyers had stymied him again, this time with no allowances for any late-game heroics.
The Flyers shut down the favorite for league MVP, R.J. Umberger and Jeff Carter scored first-period goals, and Martin Biron got his third shutout in four games yesterday to lead a 2–0 victory over the Washington Capitals and even their Eastern Conference series at one game apiece.
The Flyers return home for tommorrow’s Game 3 knowing they’ve had their way with the Capitals for five of six periods. Were it not for a third-period collapse in Game 1, they’d be up 2–0 in the series.

BRAVES LOSE GLAVINE TO INJURY
Tom Glavine has made 672 starts in the majors. Twice, 19 years apart, he failed to record an out.
The second time came Sunday against the reeling Washington Nationals, when the Atlanta Braves’ 42-year-old lefty departed with a strained right hamstring and was charged with two runs.

BRYANT, LAKERS ROUT SPURS; MOVE CLOSER TO TOP SEED
The Los Angeles Lakers took sole possession of the Western Conference lead Sunday. Keeping it might be a different matter, even if they win their only remaining regular-season game.
MVP candidate Kobe Bryant had 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists before sitting out the fourth quarter, and the Lakers routed the defending NBA champion San Antonio Spurs 106-85 for their seventh win in eight games.
“It was a big game for us,” Bryant said. “It was another step in the right direction. Going into the playoffs is all about momentum. Now, we just have to take it up another notch once the playoffs start.”

OCHOA WINS, QUALIFIES FOR LPGA HALL OF FAME
Lorena Ochoa wasn’t distracted when the fans chanted her name on only the second hole. She stayed focused on her game, even as the crowd grew to thousands by the end of the day.
But by her last stroke on the 18th hole Sunday, the emotions were too much. The Mexican star had just won her third straight tournament and qualified for the LPGA Tour Hall of Fame, all at home, surrounded by family, friends and fans. She was overcome.
“I did fine, but once I was on 18, and had a short putt, everything came into my head,” she said. “I’m glad I had a short putt.”
