Two Pro-Israel Jewish Democrats Easily Survive Primary Challenges from the Left in Florida

Two prominent pro-Israel Jewish Democrats in Florida survived left-wing primary challenges on Tuesday, bucking the trend of many Zionist lawmakers being unseated this year. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Congressman Jared Moskowitz both easily dispatched their challengers. The primary contests for Ms. Wasserman Schultz and Mr. Moskowitz became especially high-profile after Governor Ron DeSantis and Florida’s Republican-dominated legislature redrew the state’s congressional maps earlier this year. Ms. Wasserman Schultz’s deep-blue district was eliminated, leading her to run in a plurality-black seat to the south, while Mr. Moskowitz opted to run in a red district rather than challenge a fellow House Democrat. Neither Ms. Wasserman Schultz nor Mr. Moskowitz are favorites of their party’s left flank. The congresswoman, who is now poised to serve another two-year term thanks to the heavily Democratic tilt of her district, famously resigned as chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee in 2016 after several hacked emails were released showing her staff’s bias against Senator Bernie Sanders during that year’s presidential primaries. Mr. Moskowitz, meanwhile, has a staunchly pro-Israel record, much to the chagrin of some of his colleagues and constituents. Because Ms. Wasserman Schultz chose to run in the plurality-black district to the south of what used to be her district, she faced intense criticism for being what many saw as a carpetbagger. Still, she won her primary by more than 20 points on Tuesday, taking more than 45 percent of the vote while her closest competitor took fewer than 24 percent. Mr. Moskowitz had one challenger — democratic socialist Oliver Larkin. Mr. Larkin was backed by the Democratic Socialists of America and Twitch streamer Hasan Piker. Mr. Moskowitz ended up winning the primary by nearly 30 points. He will face off against the Republican former mayor of Boca Raton, Scott Singer, in what is now a light-red district. After being declared the victor, Mr. Moskowitz had a message: “My condolences to @hasanthehun,” he wrote on X, tagging Mr. Piker. The results for Ms. Wasserman Schultz and Mr. Moskowitz mark important wins for pro-Israel groups who have suffered setbacks this year. Several sitting House Democrats have lost challenges to anti-Israel primary opponents, leading many to believe that the next House Democratic majority — which is increasingly likely, according to polls — will be especially hostile to the current U.S.–Israel relationship.
