STRAND WINS WALLACE STEVENS PRIZE


Mark Strand is the recipient of the Wallace Stevens Award and $100,000 in recognition of his poetry. The Wallace Stevens Award, established by the Academy of American Poets in 1994, is given annually. Previous recipients include W.S. Merwin, James Tate, Adrienne Rich, Anthony Hecht, A.R.Ammons, Jackson Mac Low, Frank Bidart, John Ashbery, Ruth Stone, and Richard Wilbur.


Mr. Strand, the author of 10 books of poems, including “Blizzard of One” (Alfred A. Knopf, 1998), Mr. Strand has also published two books of prose, several volumes of translation (of works by Rafael Alberti and Carlos Drummond de Andrade, among others), several monographs on contemporary artists, and three books for children. He currently teaches at the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. The judges for 2004 were Jonathan Aaron, Jane Hirshfield, Lynne McMahon, W.S. Di Piero, and Rosanna Warren.

Newfoundland director Jillian Keiley is the 2004 recipient of Canada’s richest annual theater award, the Elinore & Lou Siminovitch Prize. Selected by the jury from 59 directors nominated from every region in Canada, Ms. Keiley is the founding artistic director of Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland, where she has directed 14 new productions. Ms. Keiley was awarded 75,000 Canadian dollars ($61,521). … Wilhelm Genazino is the recipient of the Georg-Buechner Prize, Germany’s top literature prize, and 40,000 euros ($50,946)…. Derek Beales, author of “Prosperity and Plunder: European Catholic Monasteries in the Age of Revolution,1650-1815” (Cambridge University Press) and a professor emeritus of modern history at the University of Cambridge, is this year’s recipient of the Henry Paolucci/Walter Bagehot Book Award and $5,000, given by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute.
