Beard Award Winners

The annual James Beard Foundation Journalism Awards for food and beverage writers have been announced. Winners in the categories of magazine feature writing are Miles Chapin for a piece in Saveur, Julie Powell for a piece in Archaeology, James Lawrence for a piece in EatingWell, and Alan Richman for articles in GQ. The magazine column award went to Lettie Teague for her work in Food & Wine. The award for magazine writing on spirits, wine, or beer went to Natalie MacLean for her work in the Ottawa City magazine, and the newspaper section prize went to Suzanne Marinson for work in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Gregory S. Walter won the newsletter prize for “Pinot Report.”
The MFK Fisher distinguished writing award was given to Mei Chin for the article “Eat Drink Mother Daughter” in the March 2004 issue of Saveur. Awards for newspaper feature writing went Rick Nelson of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Kitty Crider of the Austin American-Statesman, and Dai Huynh of the Houston Chronicle. For newspaper restaurant review, the winner was Jonathan Gold for work in LA Weekly; for newspaper or magazine reporting on nutrition, Malcolm Gay of the Riverfront Times in St. Louis; and for newspaper writing on spirits, wine, or beer, Allie Johnson for work in Pitch in Kansas City, Mo. Todd Kliman received the newspaper column award for his work in the Washington City Paper, and Jennifer Rosen won the Internet writing award for a piece on vinchotzi.com.
The awards were given solely for work done during the previous calendar year. Winners received a bronze award medallion engraved with the image of James Beard, the late journalist, author, and chef.
YOUNG LIONS HONOR GREER
Andrew Sean Greer was awarded the New York Public Library’s 2005 Young Lions Fiction Award and a $10,000 prize for his Novel “The Confessions of Max Tivoli.” The four other finalists for the award were Marc Bojanowski for “The Dog Fighter,” Sarah Shun-lien Bynum for “Madeleine is Sleeping,” Aaron Gwyn for “The Dog on the Cross: Stories,” and Stephen Elliott for “Happy Baby.”
