Furthermore, producer Joel Dorn has released “Aces Back to Back” (Hyena TMF 9364), a combination audio CD and DVD package. The singer is at his most swingingly charismatic (by this time he was singing the second line of “Beyond the Sea” as “My lover stands / On Tommy Sands”), even making tripe like “Song Sung Blue” sound great.

The only disappointment here is that the two discs don’t contain more material and that Mr. Dorn fails to provide the most basic information as to where the material comes from (as far as I can tell, it’s all from Darin’s 1972-73 variety show). But the DVD achieves in considerable less time what the Spacey movie utterly fails to do – letting us into Bobby Darin’s world and showing us why he was so great.
