THE AVIATOR
A second look at Martin Scorsese’s Howard Hughes biopic clarified my appreciation: white-hot first half, followed by a steady cooling to the knockout final image. Flaws, shmaws: that’s about 10 times what anyone else gives you.

LOS ANGELES PLAYS ITSELF
(Cinema Village) Having recently topped the documentary category in the Village Voice’s Take Six film poll (it got my vote), Thom Anderson’s marvelous and madding cine-essay on Los Angels in the movies does a victory lap at Cinema Village.

TOMORROW WE MOVE
(Walter Reade) Even at her most inconsequential, a new film by Chantal Akerman is an event. This comedy (!) with Sylvie Testud gets a New York premiere courtesy of the Jewish Film Festival.
