Conrad Black, the ex-Hollinger InternationalInc. chairmanfound guilty last week of fraud and obstruction of justice, can remain free on bail until his November 30 sentencing, a federal judge said. U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve today sustained Black’s $21 million bail package, accepting defense assertions that the former newspaper publisher would return to court for sentencing.
“My concern is not that he is going to run and hide,” Judge St. Eve said yesterday in Chicago federal court. The judge said she is concerned that Black, who lives in Canada, would oppose extradition. Judge St. Eve rejected arguments made by prosecutors that Black be jailed pending sentencing because he’s a flight risk.
Judge St. Eve said Black remains restricted to travel within the court’s jurisdiction in Illinois, and to his Florida home. She said she would consider his request to travel to Toronto. He surrendered his passport last week.
