Man Linked to Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett’s Security Detail Dies in Dallas Police Standoff

A man who reportedly served as a security guard for Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett was fatally shot by Dallas Police SWAT officers Wednesday night following an armed standoff. The man, who police say went by the name of Mike King, had been under active warrant for impersonating a law enforcement officer when officers from the Dallas Police Department’s fugitive task force tracked him to the Children’s Medical Center at Dallas.According to Police Chief Daniel Comeaux, King barricaded himself inside a vehicle in the hospital’s parking garage at around 11:40 p.m. before SWAT officers deployed tear gas to force him out. Upon exiting the vehicle, King allegedly pointed a gun at officers, who responded with gunfire. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers or bystanders were injured, though the hospital briefly went on lockdown as a precaution. Authorities have yet to release King’s real name.According to CBS News Texas, King had been living a double life — operating a legitimate-seeming security business while allegedly impersonating a law enforcement officer. He ran Off Duty Police Services, an online platform connecting North Texas officers with off-duty job opportunities, all while claiming to be a law enforcement officer himself.Multiple law enforcement sources told CBS that King had been using aliases and drove a replica undercover police vehicle fitted with stolen license plates — reportedly taken from vehicles parked near a military recruiting office — at the time he was being investigated for impersonation. Sources also told CBS that King’s background includes a criminal history, raising serious questions about how he managed to secure off-duty roles for police officers and, ultimately, a high-profile security position for a sitting member of Congress.Images obtained by CBS show King standing close to Ms. Crockett, a Texas Democrat, at public events and on the campaign trail during her recent run for a U.S. Senate seat. He reportedly worked on her security detail both in Washington, D.C., and in Texas. King also oversaw security teams at several downtown Dallas hotels and at his church.Documents obtained by CBS News Texas confirm that a person named “Mike King” received payments for “security services” from Ms. Crockett’s operations as recently as last year.The incident follows a turbulent stretch for the congresswoman. Ms. Crockett entered the Texas Democratic Senate primary three months after state Representative James Talarico and was widely considered the favorite given her national profile and fundraising strength. But Mr. Talarico defeated Ms. Crockett – who has been one of Congress’s most vocal opponents of President Trump and Republican leadership since first being elected to the House in 2023 — in what became a race less about their broadly similar progressive platforms and more about electability.At her election watch party on March 3, Ms. Crockett accused the Republican Party of interference, declaring they had “specifically targeted” Democratic voters by “meddling” in the primary. She subsequently conceded and endorsed Mr. Talarico, though she noted she was not making plans to actively campaign for him.
