Trump Releases Renderings of ‘New, Highly Improved’ Kennedy Center

President Trump is providing a glimpse of what the “new, highly improved” Kennedy Center will look like after a planned two-year overhaul of the complex.Mr. Trump released two renderings of the makeover of the building — which now also bears his name — on his Truth Social account on Friday afternoon.Mr. Trump announced last month that the center would close in July for an extensive makeover. He said it would become a “new and spectacular entertainment complex.”The renderings show only the exterior of the building, which appears little changed from its current appearance. There is no indication how the interior of the complex, which includes nine primary stages, might be affected.The president previously fired several board members appointed by President Biden and named himself as one of 14 new board members. The board elected Mr. Trump as chairman and crews added the president’s name to the façade in December of what is now called The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center For The Performing Arts.Republicans in Congress have declined to use the new name in funding bills for the performing arts complex.The center’s normally packed performance calendar has been drastically scaled back this year as scheduled performers have canceled and ticket sales have lagged.The Kennedy Center president, Richard Grenell, threatened to sue one musician over a cancellation. Chuck Redd pulled out of a traditional Christmas Eve jazz concert to protest the addition of Mr. Trump’s name to the venue.Mr. Grenell called Mr. Redd’s cancellation “a political stunt,” and said he would seek $1 million in damages for the “decision to withdraw at the last moment.”Mr. Grenell is planning to exit his own role at the center during a board meeting set for the White House on Monday, Axios reported on Friday. It said Matt Floca, a current vice president of facilities at the venue, will take over the role, which will now be concerned largely with the reconstruction.The center referred to Mr. Floca as “an experienced facilities management professional with a construction management background and an appreciation for whole building design principles” when he was added to the executive team in 2024.The board is expected to approve the renovation during Monday’s meeting. Congress approved $257 million to fund the reconstruction but Mr. Trump has said it will cost only $200 million.Congresswoman Joyce Beatty is suing to block the name change and renovations. The former ex-officio member of the center’s board argues that only Congress can decide to close the center. She also claims that she was muted during a virtual hearing in December when the board voted to add Mr. Trump’s name to the center.
