United Technologies Corp.’s Sikorsky unit may fail to win a $13 billion contract to continue making the helicopters that rescue downed American pilots, in what would be the company’s second major loss in two years.
The Air Force may name the winner of the order to build a replacement for Sikorsky’s Pave Hawk helicopters as early as today. Lockheed Martin Corp. and Boeing Co., which make bigger and more-powerful aircraft, are more likely to win than Sikorsky, nine analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News said.
Sikorsky spent about $1 billion developing the new aircraft, the S-92, and has yet to win an American military order for it. The company was beaten out by Lockheed last year for a $6.1 billion award to make the president’s new helicopter, known as Marine One, ending Sikorsky’s half-century hold on the business.
The Air Force plans to buy 141 of the helicopters through 2019.
