Marcus Brauchli has been named the new managing editor of The Wall Street Journal, replacing Paul Steiger, who has led the paper since 1991, the paper’s parent company said on Wednesday.

Mr. Brauchli is set to take over May 15. Mr. Steiger, 64, must retire by the end of the year because of the mandatory retirement age of 65 for executives at Dow Jones & Co.

Mr. Brauchli, 45, has been a foreign correspondent for most of his 23 years at the paper. Most recently, he oversaw the Journal’s redesign that trimmed its width in a move to cut printing costs by $20 million a year.

The managing editor is the top news executive at the business paper. Mr. Steiger will become an editor-at-large.
