FIRST LADY The group show “Eve” explores the Garden of Eden’s mythical first woman, sometimes idealized and sometimes scorned. Many artists look backward for inspiration: Painter Hung Liu’s “Visage” series is based on turn-of-the-century photographs of prostitutes, while David Bierk was inspired by 19th-century French artist Janmot. Timothy Cummings’s Eve plays the lute wearing ballet slippers and a straw hat. The other represented artists are Nicolas Africano and Colette Calascione. Through Saturday, September 10, Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. through Wednesday, August 31; Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. September 1 and afterward, Nancy Hoffman Gallery, 429 West Broadway, between Spring and Prince streets, 212-966-6676, free. Note: The gallery will be closed August 25 and 26 and September 2.
GOING TOWARD THE LIGHT The group show “Nimbi & Penumbrae” features 10 artists whose work examines light and shadow. Through Sunday, September 18, Thursday-Monday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., d.u.m.b.o. arts center, 30 Washington St. at Water Street, DUMBO, Brooklyn, 718-694-0831, free.
