New York summers necessarily lead to intense levels of perspiration, so why not spend those humid late afternoons partying outside with people who appreciate both art and a throbbing dance floor?
P.S.1’s Warm Up Music Series returns for its eighth year, offering 10 weeks of art, music, beer, and barbecue each Saturday afternoon from this weekend through September 3.
This week’s opening features New York City acid jazz ensemble Groove Collective as well as the spinning talents of DJ Harvey and Simon James. Other big names will play later this summer: Juan Atkins (July 16), Stacey Pullen (August 6), Tortured Soul (August 20), Doc Martin (August 27), and Norman Jay (September 3).
As always, the event is hosted in the art center’s courtyard and features an architectural installation designed by the winner of the Museum of Modern Art and P.S.1’s Sixth Annual Young Architects Program. This year, the space is elegantly framed by the new installation “SUR,” by the Los Angeles-based firm Xefirotarch.
The structure consists of a red-and-white base cast with composite fiberglass and rubber, as well as a corresponding freestanding aluminum armature covered with undulating latex and polyurethane-sprayed spandex.
“‘SUR’ is futuristic and organic, sophisticated and exhilarating,” P.S.1’s executive director, Alanna Heiss, said. “Visitors will feel as if they’ve landed on another planet for the afternoon.”
Saturdays, July 2 through September 3, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, 22-25 Jackson Avenue at 46th Avenue, Long Island City, Queens, $8 Warm Up admission from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Museum admission is free from noon to 2 p.m. on Warm Up Saturdays. For a full music lineup, please go towww.ps1.org.
