LISTENING TO CENTRAL PARK The site-specific audio art project “Her Long Black Hair,” available in Central Park, is not the average headset guide to the park. To create the recorded smorgasbord, sound artist Janet Cardiff wove together snippets of overheard conversation (“It’s not a sausage, it’s a hot dog!”), opera Kierkegaard quotes, and brief anecdotes to tell a nonlinear story about a mysterious dark-haired woman. Most of the audio guide, which lasts about an hour, was recorded on-site in the park over the course of six weeks. The Public Art Fund sponsors the project. Through Sunday September 11, Thursday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. tours begin, audio kits available at a kiosk in Central Park at Sixth Avenue and Central Park South, 212 980-3942, free with deposit of ID, reservations only for groups of 10 or more, all other headsets are first-come first-served.
