OTHELLO ON SCREEN The Shakespeare Society presents an evening focused on “Othello” as part of its Shakespeare on Film series. The event includes clips from three actors – Orson Welles, Laurence Olivier, and Laurence Fishburne – playing the Moor of Venice on screen. Tony Award-winning actor Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Hilton Als of the New Yorker, and others participate in a discussion on Othello on film. Other highlights include a silent “Othello” and a sound recording of Uta Hagen and Paul Robeson. SLAVERY AND SCHOOLS The president of the New-York Historical Society, Louise Mirrer, joins the chief of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Howard Dodson, and other panelists to discuss problems with discussions of slavery in school curricula. PUBLIC AND PRIVATE Artists Alice Aycock, Julian LaVerdiere, Dennis Oppenheim, and Lucio Pozzi discuss the relationship between public art and private commemoration in a panel titled, “Public Art/Private Monuments.” Thursday, 7 p.m., School of Visual Arts, 209 E. 23rd St., between Second and Third avenues, third-floor amphitheater, 212-592-2511, free.
