Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, a Democrat who represents parts of Brooklyn, recently sent a questionnaire to her constituents at taxpayer expense. While we have a lot of regard for Ms. Clarke, and agree with her support for comprehensive immigration reform, the questionnaire struck us as a bit slanted. So since she asked, here are her questions, and our answers.
Ms. Clarke’s question: “The War in Iraq continues. While we all support the troops, I’d like to hear your view on the war. Should we a) withdraw immediately b) send more troops c) withhold funding d) turn the country over to the Iraqis and set a timetable for withdrawal e) other.” Our answer is “e) other.” The mailing leaves a space to explain, and we’d say “Win the battle against the terrorists there.”
Ms. Clarke’s next question: “To help provide affordable health care to more Americans, Congress should: a) expand the prescription drug problem through Medicare b) provide universal health coverage c) provide tax breaks to businesses to help pay for employees health insurance d) other.” Our answer, again, is “other” to which we’d say “allow individuals to buy health insurance across state lines on the Internet, and encourage reforms of medical malpractice law at the state level.”
The third question on Ms. Clarke’s questionnaire asks, “What should we do to become more energy independent?” She offers the options of “a) increase investments in alternative fuels to lessen our dependence on foreign oil b) release strategic oil reserves c) increase incentives for purchase of hybrids and other fuel efficient vehicles.” Option “d” is our favorite standby — “other.” In the short space left for comments, we’d write, “Allow drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and allow free markets and American ingenuity to work without government interference.”
The fourth and final question asks, “I’m interested in the following issues, please keep me informed on: a) job creation b) affordable housing c) cleaning up the environment d) renewable energy e) education f ) health care g) other.” In the space left for “other,” we’d write in “winning the war against the Islamist terrorists” and “tax reductions.” Thank you for asking, Congresswoman.
