LIKUD LEADERSHIP MEETS WITHOUT SHARON
JERUSALEM – The Likud Party’s governing body met yesterday for the first time since Prime Minister Sharon’s defection. In a quiet show of hands yesterday evening at a mostly empty convention hall in Tel Aviv, the Likud delegates approved December 19 as the date for a primary election. At least five candidates are vying to succeed Mr. Sharon. The candidates pledged yesterday to refrain from personal attacks, but recriminations have already begun. A former finance minister, front-runner Benjamin Netanyahu, is the easiest target for critics who say his policies widened social gaps and deepened poverty.

E.U. SAYS IRANIAN DOCUMENTS SHOW HOW TO MAKE NUCLEAR WARHEADS
VIENNA, Austria – The European Union accused Iran yesterday of having documents that show how to make nuclear warheads and joined America in warning Tehran it faced referral to the U.N. Security Council for possible sanctions. Iran, meanwhile, suggested it was considering a compromise to reduce tensions.
Britain, in a statement on behalf of the 25-nation bloc, offered new negotiations meant to lessen concerns over Iran’s insistence it be in full control of uranium enrichment. “But Iran should not conclude that this window of opportunity will remain open in all circumstances,” a statement read by the chief British delegate to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Peter Jenkins, said.
