SEOUL, South Korea (AP) – American envoy Christopher Hill wrapped up a surprise trip to North Korea on Friday, saying he had “good discussions’ with officials there on the country’s nuclear program.
Mr. Hill arrived in the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, a day earlier on the highest-level American visit since October 2002, seeking to jump-start stalled international talks on the North’s controversial nuclear program.
“We had a good discussion about the way forward at the six-party talks,” Mr. Hill said in footage shot by APTN before his departure.
He said he held meetings with North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan, the country’s chief nuclear negotiator, as well as with Foreign Minister Pak Ui Chun.
“We discussed all aspects of the six-party process. And all aspects means all aspects,” Mr. Hill said, referring to talks that involve the two Koreas, America, Japan, China and Russia.
The American official departed from Pyongyang at about 11:15 a.m. Friday (10:15 p.m. EDT Thursday), APTN reported from Pyongyang.
