Mossad, CIA Worked With Iranian Kurds ‘For Months’, Source Says

Israel and the United States have been working with Iranian Kurds “for months,” a source familiar with the issue has told The New York Sun. “For several months, both the Mossad and the CIA have been working with Kurdish groups in northern Iraq. Israel has a long history of cooperating with the Kurds going back to the 1960s, and that relationship is now playing a role in the current strategy against the regime,” the source said. An Iranian-Kurdish source, meanwhile, told the Sun that Iranian Kurds residing in northern Iraq are preparing to cross the border to confront the Iranian regime. “I helped organize 50 young Iranian Kurdish fighters who will be ready to join the Kurds when they cross the border from Iraq into Iran. They have lived there for years but they are ready to cross the border and fight the regime in Iran,” the source said. The 50 fighters will reportedly receive AK47s when the Kurdish fighters from Iraq cross the border. “As for American-Israeli support for Kurds in Iran and Iraq; I can say that we have received moral support from them but I won’t go into more than that because it puts our forces at risk. The Iraqi militias will come after us if they know we are supported by the CIA and Mossad,” the source said. Intense Israeli and American airstrikes in north western Iran have hit Iranian regime targets hard in recent days, paving the way for the Kurds to mobilize against regime forces. Reuters reported attacks against Iranian opposition groups in Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan Region, seemingly in response to reports about a looming cross-border offensive. The Iranian-Kurdish source also said that regime forces have begun planting mines near the northern border between Iraq and Iran. The source familiar with Israel and the U.S.’ cooperation with Iranian Kurds elaborated on the strategy behind it. “If you want to destabilize a regime like Iran’s, you don’t start in Tehran — you start from the outskirts. The idea is to weaken the regime’s control in the peripheral regions so local forces, like the Kurds, can begin taking territory area by area,” the source said.“There are long-standing networks inside Iran — people trained over the years — and they support Kurdish forces on the ground. The aim is to weaken the regime while allowing the Iranian public the freedom and ability to protest,” the source said. Israel and the U.S. meanwhile ramped up attacks against the Iranian regime on Thursday, with Israeli fighter jets striking ballistic missiles and storage sites for missiles. Iran sent waves of ballistic missiles at Israel overnight into the morning hours. The assumption in the IDF is that Iran is slowly running out of ballistic missiles, which has also led to the IDF’s Home Front Command easing restrictions on public activity. Educational activities are still prohibited but gatherings of up to 50 people are permitted, “provided that a standard protected space can be reached within the required protection time.”“Workplaces may operate only in locations from which a standard protected space can be reached within the required protection time,” the IDF said late Wednesday night.
