ROME — Italy’s ‘Ndrangheta mafia is a criminal threat in America, particularly in the Northeast, Deputy Attorney General Mark Filip said yesterday in Rome.
“The ‘Ndrangheta is a serious problem and it has a vast reach,” Mr. Filip told reporters at American Embassy. “We’re very aware of it in the U.S.”
The business conducted by the 131 different ‘Ndrangheta clans operating in Calabria — the region located on the toe of Italy’s boot-shaped peninsula — is worth $69.2 billion annually, the Rome-based research group Eurispes said Wednesday. Sales of illegal drugs account for about two-thirds of the clans’ turnover, Eurispes said.
