The Rockefeller Archive Center — which houses 80 million pages of documents, 750,000 photographs, and thousands of reels of microfilm — has become an independent organization after 34 years of being part of the Rockefeller University.

The archive center, in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., will be headed by a new board of directors, including David Rockefeller and a former president of Harvard University, Neil Rudenstein. Last month, the board named Jack Meyers president and CEO of the center.

As part of the deal, the Manhattan-based research university transferred assets to the center, including a $115 million endowment, art worth $2.8 million, and property in Sleepy Hollow worth $17 million. “The family and other institutions that rely on its services agreed that its needs would be better served by making it a separate institution,” the university’s chief financial officer, James Lapple, said in a statement.

The Medical Society of the State of New York is surveying its members to determine how insurance companies influence doctors.

The e-mail survey is expected to be completed by this fall. Growing concerns about restrictions placed on physician practices prompted the survey, according to the medical society.

Lutheran To Open Senior Housing Facility

Lutheran Medical Center is set to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony today for a new senior housing facility in Sunset Park section of Brooklyn.

The new 80-unit residence, Sunset Gardens, will become the third subsidized senior housing complex run by the hospital, which broke ground on the newest facility in 2006. Lutheran also operates the 558-apartment Shore Hill Housing complex in Bay Ridge and the Harbor Hill Housing complex, an 86-apartment complex in Sunset Park.
