Leon Rose Credits Bold Moves and a Lucky Stone From the Holyland for the Knicks Championship

Leon Rose, the architect of the New York Knicks first championship in 53 years, had a unique good-luck charm by his side throughout the grueling NBA Finals.The talisman came courtesy of Howie Roseman, the executive vice president and general manager of the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles. Mr. Roseman attended one of the Knicks playoff games earlier in the spring and presented Mr. Rose with a gift that had already proven its mystical worth on professional sports’ grandest stage.According to Mr. Rose, the object was a small piece of slate from the City of David in ancient Jerusalem, a site of profound historical and religious significance. Mr. Roseman had acquired the stone during a visit to Israel and carried it with him throughout the Eagles march to victory in Super Bowl LIX to end the 2024 season.“It’s a piece of slate from the City of David in ancient Jerusalem that he got when he was there,” Mr. Rose explained in a video posted on Instagram. “He got it in 2024, and he took it to the Super Bowl, and he won the Super Bowl and he gave it to me for good luck. Unfreakin’ believable.”While the good luck charm didn’t hurt, Mr. Rose’s masterful orchestration of the Knicks roster and coaching staff played a larger part in the Knicks remarkable postseason journey that ended with the franchise’s first NBA title since 1973.Knicks owner James Dolan, who took control of the franchise in 1999, spent more than two decades cycling through a sea of front office executives. From Scott Layden and Isiah Thomas to Donnie Walsh, Phil Jackson, Steve Mills and Scott Perry, Madison Square Garden had become a revolving door of failed promises.That narrative began to change in March 2020 when Mr. Dolan handed the team to Mr. Rose. At the time, he was widely considered one of the most powerful agents in basketball, boasting a Creative Artists Agency (CAA) client list that included Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and OG Anunoby.The strategy behind the hiring was to change the Knicks image from a stoic traditional franchise that Kevin Durant once described as “not as cool” to a more desirable destination for free agents. If Mr. Rose could get his clients wearing orange and blue, then the Knicks might have a chance. But hiring an agent to run a basketball franchise seemed like a desperate move, following a trend set by Bob Myers, a former agent, who built the Golden State Warriors dynasty.Mr. Rose grew up in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and earned his law degree at Temple. He established himself by representing LeBron James from 2005 to 2012, working with fellow CAA agent Henry Thomas, to orchestrate “the Decision” which ended with Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Mr. James winning two championships in Miami.Inducted into Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2011, Mr. Rose credentials were questioned when he was named the Knicks president. But his connections and instincts proved invaluable.He cleared $30 million in cap space to sign Mr. Brunson in 2022 to be the cornerstone of the team, and later traded R.J. Barrett, a former No.1 pick, and Immanuel Quickley to Toronto for OG Anunoby.Sending multiple first-round picks to the Brooklyn Nets for Mikal Bridges raised eyebrows, as did trading the popular Donte DiVincenzo and Julius Randle to Minnesota in exchange for Karl-Anthony Towns.None of those moves were slam dunks, including his surprise decision to fire head coach Tom Thibodeu and replace him with Mike Brown after the Knicks reached the Eastern Conference Finals last year.Sports talk shows were flooded with critics, but Mr. Rose, who seldom speaks publicly, let this team do the talking for him, responding with one of the greatest playoff runs in NBA history.Ultimately, Mr. Rose’s magic as an executive was found not in a piece of ancient Israeli slate, but in the profound depth of his personal relationships.“When you’re an agent, I think anyone who knows the sports agency business, it’s all about relationships,” Mr. Towns said recently. “What Leon is one of the best in the world at is having genuine, loving relationships with people. I think because of that, you see the way our team acts, the way our team conducts itself. We conduct ourselves like family, and he’s always had that family mantra in everything he’s done.”Mr. Brunson, the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player, believed in Mr. Rose enough to accept an $113 million pay cut to help the Knicks build a championship roster. He signed a four-year $156 million contract extension in 2024 instead of waiting until 2025 to secure a five-year $268 million supermax deal.“I think he’s a great basketball mind,” Mr. Brunson said of Mr. Rose. “I also think he surrounds himself with good people. The way he’s been able to do this, especially here with all the scrutiny and everything – I just think the way he goes about his business is as good as anyone.”The stone from Jerusalem may have brought good luck, but it was Mr. Rose’s brilliant relational architecture that finally brought the Larry O’Briean Trophy back to New York.
