Mayor Mamdani’s Wife Liked Posts Cheering on Hamas’s October 7 Massacre: Report

The wife of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Rama Duwaji, is facing fierce condemnation after an examination of her social media activity showed that she had liked posts on Instagram celebrating Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.Ms. Duwaji, a 28-year-old Syrian-American illustrator, has amassed a significant social media in the wake of her husband’s mayoral campaign and inauguration. Her public Instagram account, which boasts some 2 million followers, is filled with stylish selfies, images of her artwork, and political posts about the conflict in Gaza.A deep dive into Ms. Duwaji’s social media activity, conducted by Jewish Insider, found that New York City’s first lady had liked a number of posts cheering Hamas’s brutal incursion, in which Palestinian terrorists tortured, raped, and mutilated Israeli civilians, killing some 1,200 men, women, and children, and kidnapping 251 others.One post contained stills from livestreamed footage of the attack, including images of terrorists bulldozing the fence between Israel and Gaza and Palestinians jubilantly riding a captured IDF vehicle. The images were adorned with slogans such as “Breaking the walls of apartheid and military occupation,” “Resisting apartheid since 1948,” and “Systemic change for collective liberation.”Ms. Duwaji also liked two posts supporting anti-Israel protests staged the day after Hamas’ attack. Both posts were shared on the Instagram account of a far-left advocacy group with alleged ties to the Chinese Communist Party, the People’s Forum. The posts feature images of protesters carrying signs reading “WHEN PEOPLE ARE OCCUPIED, RESISTANCE IS JUSTIFIED” and “RESISTANCE AGAINST OCCUPATION IS A HUMAN RIGHT.” The captions on both posts include the slogan “from the river to the sea,” widely interpreted as a call for the dismantling of Israel and the establishment of a Palestinian state stretching from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea.Ms. Duwaji has not responded to the report. A City Hall spokesman told Jewish Insider that “Mayor Mamdani has been clear and consistent: Hamas is a terrorist organization, October 7th was a horrific war crime, and he has condemned that violence unequivocally.”The report comes as Representative Dan Goldman of New York has faced criticism over right-wing and pro-Israel posts liked or shared by his wife, Corinne Levy Goldman, who also serves as his campaign treasurer. Mr. Goldman has maintained that his wife’s social media activity does not necessarily reflect his own views.The City Council member and minority whip, Inna Vernikov, questioned whether the mainstream media would subject Mr. Mamdani to similar scrutiny.“@nytimes did an entire exposé on the posts and likes of @RepDanGoldman’s wife, forcing Goldman to answer questions about his wife’s social media activity,” Ms. Vernikov wrote on X. “Our First Lady, Rama Duwaji, who shares a home and a life with our esteemed mayor, literally SUPPORTED HAMAS the day after the October 7 massacre.” Ms. Vernikov predicted that the Times would fail to ask Mr. Mamdani “a single question on this,” adding: “I’ll bet my life’s savings on it.”
