Schwarzenegger Has Surgery for Broken Leg

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Governor Schwarzenegger’s broken leg was put back together with wires and screws yesterday, and the “Terminator” star should make a full recovery, though he will probably be on crutches during his inauguration next week, officials said. The 59-year-old broke his right thigh bone over the holiday weekend while skiing with his family in Sun Valley, Idaho.

Heroin Supply Surges On Afghan Increase

LOS ANGELES — The amount of high-quality heroin throughout America is surging because of an increasing supply from Afghanistan, and with it the fear that record-breaking poppy harvests after the American invasion are fueling more addictions and overdose deaths back home. Heroin-related deaths in Los Angeles County soared to 282 in 2004 from 137 in 2002 before dropping to 239 in 2005, still a jump of nearly 75% in three years.

ACLU Sues Dallas Suburb Over Illegal Immigrants

HOUSTON — A Dallas suburb that has barred landlords from renting to illegal immigrants was sued yesterday by two civil rights groups that allege the controversial ordinance turns property owners into immigration agents and violates federal law. The challenge by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund seeks to derail a new law that would require property managers to check the immigration status of apartment renters in Farmers Branch.

Plane Carrying Blair Overshoots Miami Runway

MIAMI — A commercial jet carrying Prime Minister Blair of Britain and his family slightly overshot a runway at the Miami International Airport yesterday, but the plane was not damaged and no injuries were reported, officials said. British Airways flight 209 from London ran over a couple airfield lights after landing around 6:15 p.m., but did not leave the pavement and returned to the gate under its own power.
