Private College Costs Jump the Most In Six Years

The annual cost of attending a private four-year college in America rose 3.9% to $32,307 for this school year, the biggest inflation-adjusted increase since 2001, the College Board said yesterday.
Champlain College, in Burlington, Vt., had the biggest percentage increase in tuition and fees for any private, nonprofit four-year school, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education. Tuition and fees were $22,550, up 39%.
The total cost of attending a public four-year school for instate students rose to an average of $13,589, a 3.8% increase after inflation, the biggest jump since 2004, the College Board said. Before adjustment for inflation, that increase was 5.9%.
