A dead man was found lying face down in a creek in Central Park yesterday morning, police officials said.
Criminality is not suspected because there was no apparent trauma to the man’s body and his possessions were still with him, but the medical examiner’s office is set to conduct an autopsy today to determine the cause of death.
Police identified the body as Donald Bond, 43, of 1851 Third Ave. in Manhattan. He was found by an employee of the Central Park Conservancy at about 8:20 a.m. in a small creek that leads into the Lake in the Ramble section of the park. Bond’s face was submerged under water, and his right arm was tucked underneath his chest, police said. It wasn’t immediately clear how long he had been dead, police said.
Police sources said Bond had a history of epilepsy and detectives were investigating the possibility that a seizure may have led to his death.
A group of about 30 crime scene investigators, police officers, and parks department employees searched the surrounding area for clues. Yellow police tape zigzagged around about 200 square feet of trails, blocking access to part of the northern side of the lake.
“I’ve never seen anything like this,” a resident of the Upper West Side, Evelyn Dirst, 45, said. “This is just kind of scary.”
The once notorious Central Park Precinct has only had three complaints of crime — all robberies — so far this year.
