New Year’s Day brought a new operator for the ferries that shuttle sightseers to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
For more than a half century, Circle Line has run the lucrative ferry service to the islands in New York Harbor.
Last June, the National Park Service, which operates the two monuments, chose Statue Cruises LLC to succeed Circle.
The company is owned by California-based Hornblower Yachts Inc., which also operates tourist boats to San Francisco’s Alcatraz Island.
The spokeswoman for Statue Cruises, Tegan Firth, said the company made 15 round trips yesterday, and were projecting up to 4,000 visitors on their first day of operation. “Most of the boats were going out full despite the stormy weather” in the morning, she said.
