CUNY Hires 40 Professors At the College of Technology

In an effort to increase the number of full-time faculty, the City University of New York has hired 40 tenure-track professors at the College of Technology, marking one of college’s largest hiring spree’s in decades.
About 50% of the faculty at the university’s 23 colleges throughout the city are currently employed on a full-time basis, the vice chancellor for communications, Jay Hershenson, said. About half of the university’s faculty is employed on a part-time basis, and the university’s goal is to employ 70% full-time instructors across the board.
“When you have full-time faculty on campus, they’re by definition more involved in advisement, counseling, committee work, and curriculum,” Mr. Hershenson said.
The City University of New York has hired about 1,000 full-time faculty since 1999. At the College of Technology, where the student body has increase by 20% since 2003, the new hires bring the total number of full-time faculty up to 344.
