Striking van drivers who provide public transportation for thousands of elderly and disabled people approved a settlement yesterday, ending a 10-day walkout that left many riders without affordable ways of getting around.
With 53 percent of voting union members endorsing the deal, the Access-A-Ride van service would return to running at full strength as soon as operators and transit officials establish a schedule, a spokeswoman for Para Transit Drivers and Mechanics of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1181-1061, Jane Rubinstein, said.
The operators expected to be back to normal service today, the chief negotiator for the Paratransit Operators Coalition, Jeff Pollack, said.
