FBI Approves NYPD’s Secret Intelligence Facility

A newspaper reports that the FBI has approved the installation of a classified information vault at the headquarters of the New York City Police Department.
The Washington Post reports in today’s editions that the vault would end the department’s reliance on the FBI for classified data coming from Washington.
The report says Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly wanted access to federal data on threats concerning New York. Mr. Kelly requested the vault in 2002, but it has only recently been approved.
An FBI official says the agency allowed the department to go ahead with the vault only after the police had established links with the intelligence community.
About 1,000 NYPD officers are assigned to counterterrorism duty, some in foreign countries.
