Mayor Giuliani’s embattled police commissioner, Bernard Kerik, will step down from a position as a security advisor to Guyana because of unresolved legal troubles in America, the president of Guyana, Bharrat Jagdeo, said.
Mr. Kerik expressed concerns that allegations of ethical violations could taint the country’s reputation, Mr. Jagdeo said at a press conference late Wednesday night.
News outlets have reported that Mr. Kerik may be federally indicted on felony counts, including tax evasion, conspiracy to eavesdrop, and providing false information. Mr. Kerik has denied the allegations.
Mr. Kerik was forced to withdraw from a post as chief of Homeland Security in 2004 after admitting he didn’t pay taxes for a nanny.
